What to Do When Your Phone Suddenly Dies and Won't Turn On

What to Do When Your Phone Suddenly Dies and Won't Turn On

A phone that goes completely black and refuses to power on can be terrifying. But the cause is often simpler than it seems, and some issues can be fixed without a trip to the repair shop.

The moment when a phone suddenly shuts off and will not turn back on is one of the most stressful experiences for any user. The screen remains dark, no buttons produce any response, and panic sets in quickly. Many assume the device is permanently damaged. In many cases though, the problem is software related and can be resolved with a few simple attempts.

The first step is to attempt a force restart. For Android devices, press and hold the power button and the volume down button together for 15 to 20 seconds. For iPhones, press volume up, then volume down, then hold the power button until the Apple logo appears. A force restart often clears minor software glitches that cause a phone to freeze or shut down completely.

"A large percentage of cases where a phone refuses to turn on are caused by software bugs that can be cleared with a force restart, not by hardware failure."

Battery Related Issues

If the force restart does not work, the battery might be completely drained. Connect the phone to a charger and leave it for several minutes. Sometimes the battery is so depleted that it takes a while before the charging indicator appears. Wait at least 15 to 30 minutes before trying to turn it on again.

If it still does not respond, try a different charger or USB cable. A faulty charger is a common cause of charging failures. If the phone powers on with another charger, the issue is with the charger itself, not the phone.

When all these steps fail, there might be a hardware problem. However trying these simple fixes first is worthwhile before spending money on professional repair.
