Bedtime Stories - The Farmer and the Frozen Snake

Once upon a time, in a small village nestled amidst rolling hills, there lived a kind-hearted farmer named Oliver. Oliver was known for his compassion toward all creatures, whether they crawled, flew, or walked. His fields were lush with crops, and he tended to them with love and care.

One cold winter morning, as frost clung to the grass, Oliver set out to inspect his fields. The air was crisp, and the sun had yet to rise. As he walked, he noticed something unusual—a long, slender shape lying motionless on the ground. It was a snake, stiff and frozen, its scales shimmering with frost.

Oliver knew that this snake was no ordinary one. It was a deadly viper, feared by all in the village. Its bite could bring swift death. Yet, despite the danger, Oliver’s heart swelled with pity. He couldn’t bear to see any creature suffer.

He knelt down, gently picked up the snake, and cradled it against his chest. The snake’s icy body slowly thawed against Oliver’s warmth. Inch by inch, life returned to its veins. The snake’s eyes flickered open, and it regarded Oliver with a mix of surprise and suspicion.

“Thank you,” hissed the snake, its forked tongue tasting the air. “Why did you save me? You know what I am.”

Oliver smiled. “Every life is precious,” he replied. “Even yours. I couldn’t leave you to freeze.”

The snake’s gratitude was short-lived. As soon as it regained its strength, it struck. Its fangs sank into Oliver’s hand, injecting venom that coursed through his veins. Oliver gasped, pain searing through him. He stumbled backward, his vision blurring.

The villagers rushed to his side, alarmed by his cries. They saw the snake slithering away, ungrateful for the mercy it had received. Oliver’s face turned pale, and he knew he wouldn’t survive. His breaths grew shallow, and he gathered his strength to speak.

“Listen,” Oliver whispered, his voice fading. “Learn from my fate. Kindness should never blind us to evil. Not all who appear helpless are worthy of our compassion. Beware the scoundrels who bite the hand that feeds them.”

And with those words, Oliver closed his eyes, his life slipping away. The villagers stood in silence, their hearts heavy. They vowed to remember Oliver’s lesson—to be compassionate but discerning, to help those in need but not at the cost of their own safety.

From that day on, whenever someone faced a dilemma, they would say, “Remember the farmer and the frozen snake.” And the memory of Oliver’s sacrifice echoed through the hills, teaching generations the delicate balance between kindness and wisdom.

Moral of the Story :

And so, dear children, let this tale remind you: Be kind, but be wise. Not all who seek warmth deserve it, and not all who bite are grateful. Choose your compassion carefully, and may your hearts remain as warm as Oliver’s on that frosty morning.
